Overview

Goulburn-Murray is the largest Indigenous community in Victoria outside Melbourne. According to the Kaiela Institute, the local Indigenous community council, the biggest problems facing the Indigenous community are unemployment, drugs and alcohol abuse and poor school retention rates.

Local Indigenous leader, Paul Briggs OAM, has played a direct role in establishing many of the leading community organisations in Shepparton. Paul was awarded an Order of Australia (OAM) for his services to his community and broader Australia.

Working with the community

Jawun’s priorities in the past four years have been helping with employment, education and building the capabilities of local Indigenous organisations. The Indigenous leadership are now looking at re-setting their agenda to accelerate change for the community. This should also improve the community's capacity to better leverage the support from corporate Australia through the Jawun model.
